100 Years of Volkskracht Award

In 2023, Murals Inc. won a Volkskracht Award with our plan 'Turn Words Into Acts': a large-scale Rotterdam art project about (street) language on walls, in which murals based on language will be produced at about 12 educational institutions in Rotterdam. This project offers participating schools the opportunity to use a mural to establish the identity of their educational institution and/or students and to introduce their students to mural art based on language. The first mural will be completed in the fall of 2025. In 2028, the project will conclude with a relay exhibition in the presentation space of Murals Inc.

Murals Inc. has long followed the evolution of (street) language on walls. Within various contexts, the established circuit presents Text Based Art, in which text and language are central elements, departing from traditional visual elements by focusing on written words, phrases, or letters as the primary form of expression. Nevertheless, there are numerous writing styles that do not manifest themselves as often, but possess an intrinsic beauty and are interesting in terms of content. Post-graffiti writing styles are particularly fascinating and have significant influence on contemporary visual art and vice versa. These lesser-known writing styles were the inspiration for this project. With this exhibition we want to highlight the developments in the field of language in mural art and thus the versatility of writing styles/stylistic characteristics by artists, graffiti writers and graphic designers from different cultural backgrounds. We also offer insight into the relationships between language and mural art and thus the cross-pollination between the established and street circuits.

Following are various writing styles from both the established and street circuits.

In 2021 organiseerde Murals Inc. in haar tentoonstellingsruimte op de Piekstraat ‘Master Writer’, een tentoonstelling over (straat)taal op muren. In ‘Master Writer’ vonden verschillende schrijfstijlen door makers met verschillende culturele achtergronden elkaar binnen één tentoonstelling. Murals Inc. volgt al sinds jaar en dag de ontwikkeling op het gebied van (straat)taal op muren. De introductie van taal in beeldende kunst is niet nieuw, maar is volgens de kunstgeschiedenis terug te herleiden naar het begin van de 20e eeuw*. Door het gebruik van taal en schrift in kunst werden de verschillen tussen lage cultuur (taal) en hoge cultuur (kunst in haar puurste vorm) steeds kleiner. Later, in de jaren 70, zagen we taal ook steeds vaker terugkomen in het straatbeeld, door de opkomst van graffiti als protestvorm tegen de gevestigde orde. Momenteel heeft graffiti in zijn oorspronkelijke vorm zijn scherpe randen verloren en is de traditionele graffiti in de vorm van Tags en Pieces alom aanwezig. In het gevestigde kunstcircuit wordt vaak Text Based Art getoond. Er zijn echter legio schrijfstijlen die zich minder frequent openbaren terwijl zij een grote (intrinsieke) schoonheid kennen en/of inhoudelijk interessant zijn. Deze onder andere post graffiti schrijfstijlen zijn vaak waanzinnig interessant en zijn van grote invloed op actuele beeldende kunst en andersom. Deze (deels onbekende) schrijfstijlen waren het startpunt voor de tentoonstelling ‘Master Writer’.
