In May and June 2017, the exhibition ‘Abstract Wall Paintings III #destijl100years’ was on view in Apeldoorn, Rotterdam, New York, Sydney and Marseille.
‘Abstract Wall Paintings III’ was an exhibition of contemporary abstract art on walls, organized for and by artists. It was an international project, equal in time, theme and title. Several art spaces at home and abroad made this parallel project possible.
The exhibition, with many other exhibitions nationwide, celebrated the 100th anniversary of art movement De Stijl. This art movement, of which Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg and Gerrit Rietveld are the most famous examples, had a worldwide influence on the development of visual art and design.
‘Abstract Wall Paintings III’ showed abstract art, 100 years after the founding of De Stijl, and was therefore obviously international, and in contemporary form. The result was a monumental “sample card” that showed the diversity of abstract art today. Visitors looking for Mondrian were disappointed, but Mondrian would feast their eyes.
Participating art spaces: ACEC Apeldoorn, PHK18 Rotterdam, Transmitter New York, SNO Sydney, Look&Listen Marseille. (Abstract Wall Paintings was first organized at ACEC Apeldoorn in 2015).
